Handicap

Handicap Index

In the rules of golf, the Handicap Index is a number that indicates a golfer's potential playing ability.

Once you have a Handicap Index, you can calculate your Course Handicap for a particular course. Here's how:

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

The Course Rating and Slope Rating depend on the course being played (usually found on the scorecard or other course information)

Stroke Play on Handicap

Counts the total accumulated strokes. The winner is the player with the fewest total strokes. Every stroke counts, so one bad hole can greatly affect the final result. The calculation can be "Gross" (without handicap) or "Net" (minus handicap).

Stableford

Scoring in the Stableford format converts the number of strokes into points, against a fixed target score (Par). The winner is the player who collects the most points. This format is more forgiving of mistakes (you can only score 0 points, not a large minus), keeps the pace of play moving, and often keeps the competition tight until the end because the points keep changing. Points are also determined by the difficulty of each hole. These strokes are usually allocated to holes with Stroke Index (SI) 1 to 13 (hole difficulty ranking, where 1 = hardest).

Score calculation using the System36 format

System 36 is a same-day handicapping system used mainly in charity or corporate tournaments for golfers without an official Handicap Index, with the aim of creating fair competition.

Points per hole: par or better = 2, bogey = 1, double bogey or worse = 0. Handicap = 36 − points; net = gross − handicap.
